In 1811, a French chemist named Barnard Courtois was doing an experiment with sodium and potassium compounds in seaweed ash.
Once he separates these compounds, he accidentally added too
much of it and a violet cloud came out. All around the room were metal objects. The gas condensed on them making the iodine solid.
